Consultation to Merge Wolsey Infants and Wolsey Junior Academy

Hopefully you will be aware of all the work that has already gone into bringing the infant and junior schools together.

During the summer, we knocked down the dividing wall that ran through the dining hall and physically separated the two schools. Then, in September, we started the academic year with a joint leadership team and staffing structure.

Since then we have been operating as if we were one school, however we are now looking to finalise this transition by formally merging the two schools to form Tudor Primary Academy.

Full details are in our consultation leaflet, which you can access here. We would love to hear your views on this, which can be given using the online questionnaire or on a hard copy of the leaflet which will be going out to parents/carers this week.

STEP Executive Headteacher designated a National Leader of Education

The Trust is delighted that Paul Glover, STEP Executive Headteacher, has been designated a National Leader of Education (NLE). This is deserved recognition for Paul’s excellent work to rapidly improve standards in vulnerable partner schools, including: Applegarth Academy, Wolsey Junior Academy and Angel Oak Academy (formerly Gloucester Primary School). Paul joins Mark Ducker as the second NLE attached to National Support School, Gonville Academy.

Wolsey Junior Academy joins STEP

From the outset, STEP’s partnership with Wolsey enjoyed overwhelming support, particularly from parents. So we were delighted when on Friday 1st November, Wolsey Junior Academy joined Applegarth Academy, David Livingstone Academy and Gonville Academy as the fourth member of our Trust.

In keeping with the Trust’s mission, STEP partners will continue to, “strive together for excellence in partnership, so that our children, staff and Academy communities benefit from excellent teaching, learning and leadership.”

“Dramatic impact” praised by Ofsted

Only three weeks into the new academic year, Ofsted visited Wolsey to assess the school’s progress since being placed in special measures nine months earlier. Given the very poor KS2 SATs results, a judgement of “inadequate progress” seemed the most likely outcome. However, we were delighted when the inspection team concluded that, “reasonable progress” had been made based on the dramatic improvements of the previous fifteen days. Mr Glover and Mr Evans were singled out for particular praise:

“The Executive Headteacher and the Head of School have had a dramatic impact on the school, in a very short period of time……… There is a sense of urgency and speed about the work being undertaken.”

This tremendous achievement is further evidence of the transformational power of partnership through STEP.

On Friday 1st November, Wolsey Junior School converted to become Wolsey Junior Academy, a sponsored partner of The STEP Academy Trust.
